Chihuahuas have a bad reputation for being snappy and irritable but they are not born that way. There are no bad dogs, just incorrectly treated ones. You can train a puppy not to bite and get an adult dog to stop if you do the right things.

How to Stop Chihuahua Biting

Before you attempt to stop chihuahua biting, you need to find out the cause of the biting.

• Teething. Puppies bite to relieve the discomfort of teething. Always provide plenty of appropriate chew toys so that your puppy can use them and not your furniture or your fingers. Keep a few toys in the freezer as they work better when they are cold. Whenever your pup bites something other than his own toys, simply replace it with a toy and make it clear that everything else is out of bounds.
• Lack of training. If you allow a puppy to bite and chew your fingers he will grow up thinking that this is perfectly acceptable behavior. Rather discourage mouthing right from the start to avoid having to sort the problem out at a later stage when it will be far more difficult. A consistent approach always works better than one where you are constantly moving the goal posts. Decide early whet you will accept and what you won’t and stick to it.
• Top dog confusion. Chihuahuas are easy to exclude from the canine family because of their inherent cuteness and size. They are easy to spoil and mollycoddle, when in fact they need to be treated as real dogs. This means making them understand that they are at the bottom of the pecking order. A biting chihuahua might be trying to assert his dominance over the pack, which includes you and your family. This situation is actually very stressful for a dog and should be reversed. One way of showing your dog that you are in charge is to turn him on his back whenever he bites. Do not let him get up until he relaxes and submits.

Different Types of Chihuahuas

Even though there is no genetic difference between a smooth haired and a longhaired chihuahua, these are the only two varieties recognized by both the Kennel Club in the UK and the American Kennel club.

• Smooth-coat chihuahua. These dogs have short hair, but despite their names may not be smooth at all. Their coats may be very soft or have a more wiry feel.

• Long-coat chihuahua. The longhaired chihuahua has a very soft and smooth coat, smoother in fact than its shorthaired counterpart. The guard hairs are long, fluffy and fine and the undercoat is downy. Surprisingly they shed less than the shorter haired, smooth-coat chihuahua. They don’t need a lot of grooming and require no trimming. It may take a couple of years for the long coat to grow to its final length.
• Apple head chihuahua. This is the most common chihuahua. The shape of the apple head puppy’s head gives rise to the name. The skull is wider than the jaw and the forehead rises abruptly from the nose. The top of the head has a small indentation in the middle. All of this contributes to the apple shape and appearance. They generally have protruding eyes, smaller bodies and bigger heads than deer heads.

• Deer head chihuahua.  Any chihuahua that does not have the characteristic apple shaped head is referred to as a deer head. Similar looking to little deer, this type of chihuahua has a sloped forehead and a smaller head, which is elongated. They tend to be taller and thinner, with more delicate fawn like paws. Their noses are also longer.

Tea Cup Chihuahua

Tea Cup chihuahuas are not types of chihuahuas at all.

• Not recognized. Tea Cup Chihuahuas, also referred to as Tiny Toy, Pocket sized, Mini or Miniature Chihuahuas are not recognized breed standards.
• Gimmicks. Breeders have attempted to produce the smallest dogs possible to persuade people to part with their money. These dogs are just smaller than other Chihuahuas with a bigger price tag.

Chihuahua Colors

Chihuahuas come in a wide variety of colors and markings and no color is more valuable than any other.

• Common colors. These are red, fawn, cream, chocolate, blue and black.
• Solid, spotted, splashed. Chihuahuas can have solid black to solid white coloring and anything in between or a combination of colors, patterns and markings.

There are many variations in chihuahua height, weight, size and color, as well as fur and head type. It seems surprising then that there really are only two types of Chihuahuas.

A harness gives a better fit and more control by fitting over the chest and body, whilst avoiding the neck area.

There are many sound reasons for using a harness over a collar:

• Safety first. Chihuahuas are feisty little dogs that tend to think they are bigger than they actually are. It is much easier and safer to lift a small dog out of harm’s way with a harness than it is with a collar. A harness also has a much snugger fit than a collar and is much more difficult to slip out of.
• Trachea damage. A collar can cause a collapsed trachea if someone pulls too firmly on the attached leash, but a harness does not touch the delicate throat area. Chihuahuas can have breathing problems related to tracheal collapse or when the trachea flattens out. This causes reverse sneezing, gagging, coughing and wheezing. Prevention is far better than cure, so use a harness.
• Neck damage. For the same reason as above, a harness is a much better choice for protecting the delicate neck area from possible breaks and damage.
• Support. A harness provides more support than a collar and distributes the pressure from the lead more evenly over the body of the dog.
• Fashion. If you are trendy and like your dog to match your style you have a much bigger choice when it comes to using a chihuahua harness over a collar. They come in all sorts of designs, fabrics and colors to suit your mood and taste.
• Warmth. A harness that doubles up as a jacket can do double duty by keeping your pet warm as well as safe. The tiny body of the Chihuahua does not retain the heat very well and care must be taken to keep them warm.

Finding the Right Harness

The only thing worse than using a collar, would be using a chihuahua harness that doesn’t fit properly.

• The extra small dog. If you can’t find a suitable doggy harness for your chihuahua, try a kitten harness. They tend to be smaller and softer.
• Snug fit. The harness must fit snugly without restricting the dog by fitting too tightly. Avoid scratchy materials.
• Not just for show. If you do buy a harness as a fashion accessory, make sure it can do the job properly by providing the support necessary when out walking with your pooch. You don’t want him squirming out of it at a moment’s notice.

Ask anybody with a toy breed of dog what they prefer. Most would say that they would choose a harness over a collar any day. If you have always used a collar, try the alternative to see if using a chihuahua harness wouldn’t be a better fit to prevent throat issues and keep your pooch more comfortable.

Many people look at a tiny chihuahua and don’t see a dog. Instead they see a little toy animal. This is a big mistake.

• Chihuahuas are dogs. They might be small and cute but they are still very much pack animals with all the same instincts as bigger dogs.

• One step at a time. Use one command at a time and when your puppy has mastered it, you can move on to the next one whilst reinforcing the previous one.
• Repetition. You will have to repeat the commands over and over until your pup understands what you want.
• Praise. Be lavish with praise as your dog wants to please you. Only use treats as a reward for special occasions.
• Consistency and simplicity. Keep the commands simple, short and consistent to make training easier.
• Keep it short and fun. A puppy has a short attention span so train often and for no longer than 5 – 10 minutes at a time. If you make it fun and exciting by being enthusiastic you will get further quicker.

• Den security. Chihuahuas love to burrow in a den so you can use this fact to your advantage by making a crate into a den. Dogs generally do not like to eliminate in the same place that they sleep so will hold everything in until let out.
• Limit space. The area inside the crate should be just big enough for the puppy to turn around and stand up in. this is where chihuahua potty training gets tricky. These dogs are so tiny that they can easily squeeze into just about any space. If there is too much room in the crate the puppy will merely use one corner to sleep and the other to go potty.
